The Egyptian pyramids are one of the most iconic landmarks in the world and are considered to be one of the greatest architectural achievements of all time. These ancient structures were built over 4,500 years ago and are still standing today, a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the ancient Egyptians. 

The pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs and their consorts during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods of Ancient Egypt that stretched from 2686 BC to 1650 BC. In the UK at this time we were busy building Stonehenge! They built things to last in those days.  

The pyramids were constructed using large blocks of limestone and granite that were quarried from nearby areas and transported to the building site using sledges and ramps. The largest pyramid, the Great Pyramid of Giza, is made up of over 2 million blocks of stone and stands over 140 meters tall. It is believed to have taken 20 years to build.
