Not quite the highest, but it is certainly high enough 

The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc at 4,808m, Mt Kenya is 5199m and is not even the highest mountain in Africa! Ok it is the 2nd highest, only Mt Kilimanjaro is higher.     

There are at least 6 different routes to climb the mountain and these cater for different skill levels from beginners using the Sirimon route to the Naro Moru route which is the quickest route up the mountain to the Chogoria route which is considered by many to be the most scenic. 

Most trips take around 4-5 days to reach your highest point, note not all routes will take you to true summit of the mountain but in most cases its close enough. The tours take advantage of either mountain huts for your overnight accommodation or pre pitched tents and they all include your meals whilst climbing.

This is proper mountain climbing and does need to be taken seriously. You won’t need ice picks or expensive ropes or crampons but you will need warm clothing, gloves, hiking boots and your own warm sleeping bag.  

Most tours start from Nairobi and the fee being charged should include everything you need whilst climbing, including entrance to Mt Kenya and transfers to and from Nairobi to Mt Kenya. All you need to ensure is that you are of a general level of fitness, that you can walk 4-5 hours per day and have a decent camera or camera phone to adequately record one of the experiences of your life.
