When you think of a safari its often a toss up whether you think of Kenya first or South Africa but almost certainly you will think of the Kruger National Park when thinking of the best place to go.
However, there are other parks that you maybe wouldn’t know straight off but you have seen them on films and TV series. For example, Shamwari, home and inspiration to Born Free in the Eastern Cape that has collected over 50 awards, many for their conservation work. Or Glen Afric Reserve, setting for the ITV series Wild at Heart?

What few people realise is that there is also a marine equivalent of the big 5 animals and these are inhabitants of the warm waters around South Africa, where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Oceans meet.
The big 5 Marine are the African penguin, the Cape fur seal, the Great White shark, dolphins and different types of whale, in particular Humpback whales. Seeing these marine animals up close is a never to be forgotten experience.
So, if you prefer your safari experiences to be on dry land staying in a lodge or if you prefer to safari both on and in the ocean South Africa offers the chance to do both, in one trip. Now, hold on, that sounds like a perfect holiday to me.

Close to Johannesberg and Pretoria The Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa and also one of its most well known and popular and should be on everyone's bucket list somewhere.

Created when a volcano erupted 1.2 billion years ago Pilanesberg Game Reserve is the 4th largest in South Africa. Just 3 hours drive from Johannesberg it is perfect for that get away from it all feeling.

The Big 5 animals call it home as does over 350 species of bird and all waiting for you to visit. You can even join the birds with a hot air balloon ride. One thing that isn't here though is malaria.
