In the shadow of Mont Blanc is possibly the best known ski resort in the French Alps, Chamonix.
The site of the very first Winter Olympics in 1924, Chamonix has a varied ski landscape providing enough entertainment and variety for all skiers.
You can get more than your fill of off piste skiing or, for that greater challenge, you can ski one of the infamously steep slopes that are abundant here
Alpe d'Huez is the centre of one of the largest interconnected ski areas in France. Also at 3,300m it is one of the highest villages too.
And, if that isn't enough, Alpe d'Huez is also home to the longest ski run in Europe at 16km long.
Everything about Alpe d'Huez is big. 249kms of ski runs, 41 green runs for beginners, 34 blue runs for 2nd timers, 40 red runs for intermediates and 16 black runs for experts. Not to mention the off piste area at Pic Blanc.
At the heart of the Trois Vallees ski area, the world's largest, is Courchevel.
With over 4m of annual snowfall and some of the best looked after pistes in the Alps, Courchevel offers a variety of long and technical runs for beginner level up to the most expert skiers. The expert skiers preferring the off piste runs and the mogul dominated black runs.
Furthermore, Courchevel also has the remarkable claim to fame that it has 7 Michelin starred restaurants, with many luxury boutique hotels, as well as upscale lodges and 5 star hotels too.
Courchevel is defintely one of those towns where you never know who you might bump into.
Meribel is a very family friendly resort with plenty to do for the children and beginner skiers. There is a trail, the Moon Wild, especially for children that winds through the trees, where life sized animals are hidden.
There has been a lot of investment in the ski lifts recently meaning more people can get to the top of the slopes more quickly than was the case previously.
With a greater percentage of the runs around Meribel being for Green and Blue runs, there is also some challenging runs at a Red level for intermediate skiers.
The highest point of the Meribal pistes is over 3,200m so it has a good snowfall record too
